Institute of IED Management, CRPF Pune The Institute of IED Management, CRPF, established on 23 Feb 2012, at IIM Pune (Maharashtra) acts as the nerve center for imparting training to CRPF, State Police and other Central Armed Police Force personnel, for capacity building in the field of counter IED. For its outstanding contribution in the field of IED management, IIM has been conferred the FICCI SMART Policing Award twice, in 2017 & 2019.

Location

IIM is located at a distance of about 40 Km from Pune City on Mumbai-Pune highway at Talegaon Dabhade. Pune airport is about 40 Km away from the Institute while Pune railway station is 33 Km.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Capacity building - to create a pool of trained BDDs personnel.
• Post-Blast Analysis - To carry out post blast analysis after IED blast.
• Training- Organise various courses for BDD as well as GD personnel of the force and other sister agencies.
• To prepare skilled trainers in the field of IED.
• Trial & Demonstration - To carry out trials of various new Equipment for finding suitability prior to induction in the field.
• Guide Sector IED Advisors for effective implementation of IED Policies.

Command Structure

The Institute is headed by Deputy Inspector General and supported by Commandant, four Deputy Commandants and two Assistant Commandants. The institute has total strength of 42 officers and men and currently headed by Sh. Rajeev Kumar DIG

Training Activities

Achievements and Awards

• Awarded the "Best Training Institution" Trophy-2025.
• Accredited as “उत्कृष्ट” Training Institute by the Capacity Building Commission-2026.
• Created 185 BDD (Bomb Detection & Disposal) Squads for CRPF.
• An Extension Centre was established at Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, in May 2025, and training was imparted to 810 personnel of CRPF battalions based in Chhattisgarh.
• More than 14,000 personnel from all security forces have been trained in BDD.
• Secured Gold Medal in Anti-Sabotage Check (Access Control) at the 69th AIPDM, Nagpur (March 2026), under the guidance of IIM Pune, and also secured Silver and Bronze Medals at AIPDM 2025.
• Received the FICCI Smart Policing Award in 2017 and 2019.
• Received the NSG C-IED Innovator Award in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025.
• IIM's contribution towards the successful conduct of ASC during the G-20 Summit held in 2023 was appreciated by the Commissioner of Delhi Police, Government of India.
• Prepared the Security Forces for challenging tasks such as SANJY (Amarnath Ji Yatra), GPE (Elections) and AE, etc.
• Modernization of the Model Room and Equipment Gallery.

Training Capacity: The training imparted at this institute is highly specialised, operation-oriented and in consonance with the prevailing security environment of the country. The Institute has trained more than 14,000 personnel in the specialised trade of Bomb Detection and Disposal. Nearly 15% of the seats in specialised courses are allotted to BPR&D, which are subsequently allocated to other CAPFs and State Police organisations. The Institute has also trained participants from friendly foreign countries, including Nepal, on the advice of MHA, as well as other foreign personnel during familiarisation visits. Thus, so far, the Institute has trained approximately 1,200 personnel from State Police organisations of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, J&K, Maharashtra and other premier organisations such as SPG, NSG, Greyhounds, Octopus, etc., clearly depicting its pan-India character.

Infrastructure: The Institute has a state-of-the-art academic and training ecosystem comprising a technology-enabled Model Room, Archive Gallery, Demolition Wing, Equipment Gallery, modern classrooms, digital learning platforms, Conference Hall, Library, two Modular IED Ranges, an Advanced R&D Lab, a studio for online classes, etc.

Specialisation: The Institute conducts specialised Post-Blast Analysis and disseminates technical information through journals, guides, research papers and iGOT videos to all stakeholders, including MHA, BPR&D, SVPNPA, CME, all CAPFs and District SPs affected by the IED menace.

Policy Making: The Institute has been mandated to frame QR/TDs and conduct trials of all Counter-IED detection and disposal equipment, which are subsequently formalised by MHA for procurement by all CAPFs.The Institute has also hosted delegations from Australia, including a visit in 2017 for training, capacity building and sharing of best practices on behalf of the Government of India. The Principal of the Institute has participated as a member of delegations on IED-related matters in Singapore and the UK.

National Level Role: The Institute of IED Management (IIM) is making a significant contribution at the national level in strengthening and shaping the Counter-IED framework in the country. At the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) level, IIM contributes towards the formulation and refinement of Counter-IED operational strategies through systematic data collection, data analysis, field-based case studies, identification of emerging IED trends and dissemination of operational best practices.

IIM also plays a vital role in enhancing the operational preparedness of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS) by conducting specialised training and capacity-building programmes for personnel from State Police Forces, CAPFs and the Armed Forces.

Further, IIM contributes to the planning, coordination, supervision and operational preparedness for major national and international events, including G20 and SANJY, with a focus on Counter-IED preparedness, inter-agency coordination and seamless execution.

Through these multifaceted initiatives, IIM serves as an important institutional platform for national-level coordination, knowledge sharing, capability development and operational preparedness in the field of Counter-IED management.

Innovations/Research Work: The Institute has made concerted efforts in R&D activities and has provided innovative solutions to user organisations. For its contributions in the field of Counter-IED innovations, the Institute has received the NSG C-IED Innovations Award for a record five years.
