Brigadier Swaran Kumar Lama (Retd), DIGP, Principal, CSJWT, Belgaum (Karnataka) is a second generation Army Officer who was commissioned into the Second Battalion of the Fifth Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) in June 1985 and commanded the Fourth Battalion of the same Regiment from May 2004 to June 2006 in Poonch (Line of Control, J&K) and Udaipur (Rajasthan).
He is an alumuni of Lawrence School, Sanawar, the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He has acquired Post-Graduation Degrees from Madras University in MSc (Defence & Strategic Studies) and from Osmania University in Masters of Management Science.
He topped his Commando Course and was awarded the coveted ‘Commando Dagger’. He was also adjudged the Best-Student in Mountain Warfare Course at High Altitude Warfare School, Gulmarg.
Brigadier Swaran Kumar Lama has participated in a number of operations, to include Operation PAWAN in Srilanka, Operation RAKSHAK-II in Punjab, four times in Operation RAKSHAK in J&K, and, Operation MEGHDOOT in the Siachen Glacier.
He has also held many important Regimental, Staff and Instructional appointments including Staff Officer to Deputy Force Commander (UN Mission, Lebanon), Director, Financial Planning at the Army Headquarters, Command of a newly raised Brigade with operational role along the LAC, Brigadier General Staff at the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun) and thereafter at Army Training Command (Shimla).
Brigadier Swaran Kumar Lama has been bestowed with the following awards:-
(a) Army Commander’s Commendation for Bravery, in 1992, in the rank of Major.
(b) Vice Chief’s Commendation for Distinguished Service, in 2011, in the rank of Colonel.
(c) Army Commander’s Commendation for Distinguished Service, in 2017, in the rank of Brigadier.
Brigadier Swaran Kumar Lama joined CRPF on 02 December 2019 and assumed the charge of Principal, CSJWT on 28 May 2020
